Your journey begins with a morning pickup from your accommodation in Iquitos or our office by private car or minivan, depending on group size. From there, we drive south for about 1 hour and 45 minutes to Nauta, with a short introduction to Iquitos and its surroundings along the way.
At Nauta port, board a private boat for a 3-hour upriver navigation through beautiful scenery, with chances to spot gray and pink river dolphins, herons, turtles, and other species along the riverbanks. Upon arrival at Santo Domingo community, the official checkpoint for entering the reserve, we register and present tickets to the officer in charge. The entrance is regulated by SERNANP.
We continue by boat for another 30 minutes to Buenos Aires community, observing birds and other wildlife along the way. After a jungle walk in the primary forest, enjoy a nocturnal hike in search of spiders, snakes, lizards, frogs, and rodents, while listening to the sounds of the night. Overnight is in a typical village house in Buenos Aires, where you will sleep in individual beds with mosquito nets.
Rise early to watch the sunrise over the rainforest before setting out on expedition. Look for monkeys and sloths, then explore the riverbanks by canoe, staying alert for wildlife activity in the morning.
Next, travel about 3 hours along the Pucate River, going deeper into the primary jungle. You will also try artisanal piranha sport fishing with guidance and equipment provided. If luck is on your side, you may catch Acarahuazu (Oscar fish), Fasaco (Common trahira), and more.
Continue with sightings of pink dolphins (Inia geoffrensis) and gray dolphins, with the opportunity to swim in the Pucate River inside Pacaya Samiria. A jungle walk through virgin rainforest follows, including a visit to the Lupuna, one of the largest trees in the Amazon rainforest.
Later, explore Iricahua lake after a 2 to 3 hour walk through the jungle. Here, you may see woolly monkeys, howler monkeys, titi monkeys, Paiche (Arapaima Gigas), turtles, and caimans basking in the sun. In the evening, head out on a nocturnal expedition in search of white and black caimans. Afterward, set up camp and spend the night in tents in the primary jungle.
Start the day with an early canoe excursion and birdwatching, when wildlife is most active along the riverbanks and inside the jungle. Continue with a jungle walk looking for primates and exploring nearby cochas in search of more animals.
On the way back, stop in Buenos Aires community, where you may have time to rest and, if you wish, support the local community by purchasing handmade handicrafts. Then return by boat to Nauta town, followed by ground transportation back to Iquitos. Drop-off is at our office, your accommodation, or the airport.
